Truckee Flips the Switch on the Holiday Season

The first holiday lights in Tahoe are usually the simple ones that stick with you: a downtown street dressed for winter, kids decorating trees and everyone standing outside with something warm in hand.

Downtown Holiday Festival and Bud Fish Tree Lighting

Historic Downtown Truckee kicks off the season on Friday, November 20. Kids decorate trees starting at 4:15, the Bud Fish Tree lights up at 5, and Santa arrives right on cue, with hot cocoa from the Rotary Club of Truckee. It's a downtown tradition with a small-town feel that doesn't need much explaining.

Where: Historic Downtown Truckee and Train Depot Island, Truckee, CA

When: Friday, November 20, 2026, 4:15 to 6 PM. Tree decorating at 4:15 PM, lighting and Santa at 5 PM.

Cost: No admission listed. Check the Truckee Chamber event page for current details.

Three More Ways the Season Starts

Soroptishop Holiday Artisan Faire

The night before the tree lighting, Soroptimist International of Truckee Donner brings local artisans together for an early round of holiday shopping. It's a good chance to find handmade gifts while supporting a local service club.

Where: Truckee Donner Recreation Center, 10981 Truckee Way, Truckee, CA

When: Thursday, November 19, 2026, starting at 5:30 PM

Cost: The Truckee Chamber listing shows $10 admission, or $18 with a glass of wine from Truckee River Winery or a non-alcoholic drink. Check Soroptishop for final details.

Tahoe City Small Business Saturday and Community Tree Lighting

On November 28, Tahoe City, the West Shore and Alpine Meadows put local shops front and center with promotions, pop-ups and specials. New this year, the Tahoe City Downtown Association adds a community tree lighting at the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park, with Santa and performances by the Tahoe Lake Elementary School Choir and the Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus.

Where: Tahoe City shops, Sierra Surf Club and Tahoe City Winter Sports Park

When: Saturday, November 28, 2026. Gift wrapping 2 to 7 PM at Sierra Surf Club. Tree-lighting time to be announced.

Cost: Gift wrapping is free with a receipt for a local purchase of $25 or more made between November 21 and December 18. Check the Tahoe City Downtown Association for the full program.

Tahoe Donner Light Up the Night

Also on November 28, Tahoe Donner hosts its annual tree lighting at The Lodge outdoor pavilion, with Santa and Mrs. Claus, kids' crafts, cozy drinks and a raffle. Get there on time if you want to catch Santa's arrival.

Where: The Lodge Restaurant and Pub outdoor pavilion, 12850 Northwoods Boulevard, Truckee, CA

When: Saturday, November 28, 2026, starting at 5:30 PM

Cost: Free to attend. Drinks, snacks and raffle tickets are available for purchase. Check Tahoe Donner for details.

A Local Note

The Tahoe City tree-lighting time hasn't been announced yet, so check the organizer page before you plan around it. Once November weather settles in, check road conditions before driving between Truckee and the lake, too.

Traditions like these come together because local volunteers, merchants and service clubs keep showing up year after year. They're also a reminder that Tahoe neighborhoods feel different when people are living their regular lives here. If you're trying to figure out which area feels most like your kind of Tahoe, nights like these tell you quite a bit.
